Finally Starting Something New!

I was playing around with some ideas yesterday and made this little brooch. It was fun to make - finish - something! I also started working on this hollyhock quilt.I think after I finish the applique part I'm going to paint the flowers a little with the oil pastels. I love needle turn applique. Next to beading it is my all time favorite thing.

I also cut out the pieces for a little owl art quilt.
and also this one.I'm not loving them yet, but I have some beading ideas for them that I think will be fun.

I promised the kids a lot of pool time this week so I wanted to get these blocks all ready to go with me. It feels so good to be sewing again. I was up until after midnight last night just playing around with my fabric....good good day yesterday!

Kabob Recipes

It was such a beautiful weekend! I feel so much better this week. More positive. More relaxed. There is a lot less craziness now that our calendar is blank until we leave for the beach in a few weeks. I caught myself packing some things last night and making my vacation list - I think I need this vacation more than anyone else!

Saturday I splurged on steamed crabs! Crazy expensive now but oh so good! Of course I completely ruined my food budget for the next two weeks but sometimes you just have to go a little crazy and take the plunge! I love love love steamed Maryland blue crabs with Old Bay seasoning --- ahhh, too too good. When I was a kid they were $5 a dozen and they were HUGE! Now they are $32 a dozen and they called them heavy mediums but seriously - back in the day we would have thrown them back as too small. Just another example of the sad state the Chesapeake Bay is in.

We went to the park/playground near our house. We were the only ones there for most of the time. It was so pretty and quiet. The weather was perfect.
Jason didn't come with us but Molly, Ryan, and Kellie had a great time together.
I made my favorite cheese cake for dessert - the yum factor on this is off the chart!
and we had kabobs - chicken, mushroom, red onion
and steak, cherry tomato, zucchini
they are very good. Here are the recipes:
Lemon Chicken Kabobs With Mint Marinade
4 Boneless Skinless Chicken Breast Halves
1 (8-oz) Package Small Whole Mushrooms (about 1 to 1 1/2 inches in size)
1/4 Cup Fresh Lemon Juice
1 Tbsp Finely Chopped Fresh Oregano or 1 tsp dried oregano leaves
1 Tbsp Finely Chopped Fresh Mint or 1 tsp dried mint leaves
1/2 tsp Salt
2 Tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil
1 Garlic Clove, Minced
1/4 Red Onion, cut into 4 wedges
Hear Grill. Cut each chicken breast half into eight 1 inch pieces. Place chicken and mushrooms in a resealable food storage plastic bag or a 13x9 inch (3 quart) baking dish.
In small bowl, combine lemon juice, oregano, mint, salt, oil, and garlic; mix well. Add to chicken and mushrooms; toss gently to coat. Seal bag or cover dish. Let stand at room temperature for 10 minutes to marinate, turning or stirring once.
When ready to grill, alternately thread chicken pieces, mushrooms and onion wedges evenly onto four 12 to 15 inch metal skewers; discard marinade. Place kabobs on gas grill over medium high heat or on a charcoal grill 4 to 6 inches from medium high coals. Cook uncovered 10 to 14 minutes or until chicken is no longer pink, turning once. Serves 4
Sirloin, Zucchini and Cherry Tomato Kabobs in Red Wine Marinade
1/4 Cup Worcestershire Sauce
1/4 Cup Dry Red Wine
2 tsp Dried Italian Seasoning
3/4 tsp Salt
1 Tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil
1 Pound Beef Sirloin Steak, cut into 24 (1 inch) pieces
2 Medium Zucchini, cut into 3/4 inch slices
8 Cherry Tomatoes
Heat grill. In resealable food storage plastic bag or medium nonmetal bowl, combine Worcestershire sauce, wine, Italian seasoning, salt and oil. Mix well. Add steak, toss to coat. Seal bag or cover bowl. Let stand at room temperature for 15 minutes to marinade, turning or stirring occasionally.
When ready to grill, alternately thread steak, zucchini, and tomatoes evenly onto eight 8-inch metal skewers; reserve marinade. Place kabobs on gas grill over medium-high heat or on charcoal grill 4 to 6 inches from medium-high coals. Brush kabobs with reserved marinade; cover grill. Cook 5 minutes.
Brush kabobs with reserved marinade; turn and brush again. Cover grill; cook an additional 4 to 7 minutes or until steak is of desired doneness. Discard remaining marinade. 4 servings.
They are both very yummy. Try them.
Happy Monday!

Hi Friends.

Sheesh. I have been swallowed whole by life right now. Three more days and this crazy schedule will be finished! No more drivers ed. No more Physical Therapy. I can't wait, because around those two things Molly and Jason keep making plans with their friends and since everyone's mom seems to work - guess who does all the driving?! yeah. So I'm looking forward to not being in my car all day and night!

I wanted to tell you something kind of funny. You know how Ryan is "my one" who tries my mothering skills to the max - well, his two best friends are not two boys I would choose, but you know how that goes. So anyway, I walk in the kitchen yesterday and there is Ryan watching a YouTube video on How To Make Fireworks At Home. LOL. So of course knowing this boys track record I said "DON"T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT MR!" LOL. Oh, I hope I survive raising this boy. :O)

Have a great day friends.

*** Update: He just asked "hey Mom, what do you think would happen if I put a battery in the microwave?" Me: I think you would have a very short life. LOL - God help me! LOL

Good News/Bad News

Hi friends. Well, the good news...I got my laptop back - hooray! The bad news...a stomach virus has hit my house with a vengeance. Ryan was sick Sunday and Monday. I took him to the doctor and he has strep. Kellie got sick Monday afternoon but has been fine ever since. Jason's been queasy since Tuesday night - no other symptoms - I'm not sure if he has strep or just a mild stomach virus. I'm waiting for him to get up to see if he needs to go to the doctor or not. I'll call the doctor if he's still feeling sick today. And then there is me...I got up not feeling well yesterday but I thought it was PMS it soon became very clear that it was not PMS! I can't get two steps from the sofa. This is not fun. I have a hair appointment at 12:45 today - I guess I'll be cancelling that. I think I can get Molly and her friend to Drivers Ed, but there is no way I can sit through PT with Molly. I'll have to reschedule that. I hate stomach viruses! I don't like being trapped on a sofa.

I was in my sewing room the other day with a few hours to play and I couldn't think of anything to make!!! I have so many things I want to try but then when I got in there I couldn't get focused on anything. I pulled a bunch of fabric but couldn't make it work. Then I pulled a bunch of paints, glitter, stamps, embossing powders, etc to decorate some fabric and ended up putting it all back with nothing to show for it. I hate days like that. I think it's because I haven't had any time to make anything recently so when I do grab a few hours I put myself under pressure and then that works against me.

So yet another week with nothing fun to show for it. I'm hoping that once we get in a summer routine (especially after next week when Molly will be finished with Drivers Ed and Physical Therapy) that things will settle down around here and I'll be able to get in more sewing. I did pull some pretty fabric to make a pin cushion yesterday before it became very clear that I would not be able to be in a sitting position or longer than three seconds so I'm looking forward to feeling better so that I can make it. I was really hoping that that would be today - so far - no.

Hellloooo Again!

Sheesh. 7 days without Internet service in my house was making me crazed! My laptop is still in the shop - Mark killed it! He says he didn't do anything, but it was working fine - he used it and now it's not working ... he killed it! So now I have Internet service again, but I WANT MY LAPTOP!!!! Hopefully it will be home again very soon.

Molly put up a new screen saver on our computer...
This is a photo from the beach place my mom and dad owned until a few years ago. It got to be too much for them to use it so they sold it. The kids and I loved that place. Up until Jason started school, we would spend the entire month of June there every year. I miss those days. Anyway, I didn't think anything of it at the time, but then the Internet guy was here fixing our Internet connection and he needed me to start the computer. I can't even imagine what he was thinking when he saw that photo with that caption. :O)
Last Monday when I got home from the grocery store there was a message on my answering machine from the art supply company..."Since you were sent the markers by mistake and you weren't charged for them, you can just keep them." YEAH BABY! Of course five minutes after I did my happy dance I was thinking - Darn! why couldn't they have been the Copic Sketch Markers I want!?!

Summer vacation officially started today! Woo Hoo...I'm so glad I have Internet again! I missed all of my favorite blogs and talking to you.

Someone's In BIG Trouble!

I placed an order with Jerry's Artarama a few days ago. It came today. Inside the box were these markers...I don't remember ordering these??? So I look at my order form. The little clippy things I ordered for $3.99 weren't in the box and these markers aren't listed anywhere on the packing slip or on my order form. Hmmmm, are they a free thing because the clippy things are out of stock (not likely, but maybe) so I go on line to see if they are having a promotion - you know, spend this much money and get these free kind of thing. Although I didn't spend much at all with this order so, yeah - not really worthy of a free gift. I didn't see any offers like that online. Okay, just how much are these markers....$99.99!!!! OMG! someone must have grabbed these instead of my $3.99 clippy things! So being the good girl who doesn't want to burn in hell, I called the company to let them know -- I only got their voicemail so I'll have to let you know what they say. Maybe they'll say - you are soooo nice you can keep them! yeah, right. :O)

Recipe and Randomness

I forgot to take a picture of Molly this morning. She is sporting this GIANT X on her leg in big 2 inch wide tape! It looks crazy. It runs from about 3 inches above her knee to about 3 inches below! She can't straighten her leg so she walks with a limp. I'm not really sure what the purpose of the tape is - they told her to keep it on for 2 or 3 days. She is not loving the PT! She's good about going, but she dreads it.

I can't believe it's Friday! The days are just flying by and at the end I keep thinking - where did this day go? I didn't get to do anything I wanted to do! Just one more week and it's summer vacation! hhhhh, I'm ready. And if you could see the outfits that Kellie has been sporting the last two days you would definitely see how obvious it is that I'm ready for vacation! LOL Today...ohhhh lordy. Corally-pink and white striped capri leggings with a bright yellow tshirt and ahhh, purple shoes. mmmmm. That's a look to go with! :O) I'm to the - suuuuuure, whatever you want - point of the school year. I did say "ah, Kells are you sure that outfit works? maybe it needs a skirt over it?" no. I like it. -- Ooookay my little fashionista - who am I to dis' second grade fashion. :O)

And the rain ---- ugh, I can't take another day of rain. My yard is turning into a swamp. They are saying that tomorrow will be hot and sunny. FINALLY! But then next week....back to rain for the first three days.

Oh, I have a recipe for you. This weekend we are going to cook our dinner on the grill - finally after all these days of rain. We called these turtles back in the day, but now they are referred to as dinner packets - very fancy new name, but in this house - they're turtles. So I've made these two ways - basically the same just the sauce is different...

Paprika Chicken Turtles

4 Boneless Skinless Chicken Breast Halves (about 1 1/4 pounds)
2 Cups Quartered Small Red Potatoes (about 4 or 5 potatoes)
1 1/2 Cups Baby Cut Carrots Cut Lengthwise In Half
1 Cup Frozen Cut Green Beans (from 1 pound bag)
1 Cup Chicken Gravy (from 12 oz jar)
2 Tbsp All Purpose Flour
1 tsp Paprika
1/2 tsp Dried Thyme Leaves
2 Tbsp Finely Chopped Fresh Parsley

1. Heat coals or gas grill for direct heat. Cut four 18x12 inch pieces of heavy duty foil. Place chicken breast half on each piece of foil. Top with potatoes, carrots, and green beans. In small bowl, mix gravy and flour until well blended. Drizzle over chicken mixture. Sprinkle with paprika and thyme.

2. Fold foil over chicken and vegetables so edges meet. Seal edges, making tight 1/2 inch fold, fold again. Allow space on sides for circulation and expansion.

3. Cover and grill packets over medium heat 30 to 40 minutes, rotating packets 1/2 turn every 15 minutes, until juice of chicken is no longer pink when centers of the thickets pieces are cut and vegetables are tender. Place packets on plates. Cut a large X across top of each packet; fold back foil, sprinkle with parsley. Serves 4

These are very good. We make these every time we go camping. We make them up in the morning and pack them in the cooler so that when we get to the campsite (2 hours away) dinner is ready to cook as soon as the fire is ready. I also make them with the same chicken, carrots, potatoes, and green beans - but I use Zesty Italian salad dressing over them instead of the gravy, paprika, thyme. Both sauces are good. I normally don't use frozen vegetables when I cook, but the frozen green beans help with the moisture in the packets so that they don't burn. I also cut the chicken into strips so they cook a little faster. Sometimes if the chicken breasts are too thick the vegetables get mushy and the sauce starts to burn before the chicken is ready.

I'm looking forward to a nice sunny weekend here. I hope you enjoy yours too! See you Monday!

Painting and Coloring

I can't decided how I want to make the curtains - I keep changing my mind. I spent some time yesterday playing around with my Neocolors, watercolor pencils, and acrylic paints.
This one is going to be an ATC...
I want to work on a few more today if I can fit it in. Hope all is well for you. Happy Thursday (already??!)

Just Call Me Bunny...

Funny weekend. Mark has been wanting a Harley Davidson motorcycle for a long long time. He had a motorcycle when I met him but he sold it right before we got married. So for the last few weeks we have been looking at them, talking about it, etc. So this past weekend was beautiful! It made me miss my Jeep...It was Candy Apple Red and it was the very first car I had ever purchased on my own. I was 19 years old and I loved that Jeep. It was the last year they made the CJ7. Oh how I loved that car!

Anyway, back to this past weekend. We were out running errands and Mark and I decided to just go for it and get one. Now picture it...Saturday afternoon, beautiful day, pulling into the Harley Davidson lot, a gazillion bikers with their bikes EVERYWHERE!!! And here we come. Bunny and Biff to buy a bike! LOL We weren't planning to drive it home just yet, we were going to pick one out and then Mark was going to come back to sign all the paper work because we had to get home to pick up Jason and Molly from work. So we get out of the car...me in a bright pink golf skirt with white sleeveless polo golf top that has a pink and a green stripe on the collar and around the arms. yeah. And Mark, well, he's in plaid shorts and a polo! LOL!!! Yeah, we were Bunny and Biff. :O) So as we walk into the store, passing crazy biker men with their scary biker chicks we were a tad nervous. Luckily BJ the amazingly nice salesman sees us and says "HEY GUYS! ARE YOU BACK TO PICK OUT A BIKE?" so at that point we were no longer the super geeks - we have connections here people - Biker BJ likes us! We pick a bike...
Since that photo is so crappy, this is the bike we bought Ultra Classic Electra Glide. Later that evening, after Mark came home with the bike, we are out for a little drive.
Mark: Let's swing in your Mom and Dad's and show them the bike.
Me: ahhh, they'll probably say something stupid and piss us off. Are you sure you want to see them today?
Mark: Yeah, they'll like it.
Me: mmmm.
We pull up at my parents Condo. I run up to see if they want to come out and see it.
Me: Hi Mom. Mark and I bought a motorcycle and we thought you might want to see it.
Mom: You bought a motorcycle? (it the - what are you some kind of idiot - voice that we all love so much)
Me: Yep. You don't have to come out and see it if you don't want to, we were just our riding around and thought we would swing by.
Mom: Is that why your dressed in that kind of outfit? (yet again in the voice)
Me: Yep.
This would be my crazy biker outfit...

Wild biker boots...
my Wild biker jean jacket (that I got from Macy's last year - because I'm sorry, but it was chilly on that bike going 55 mph!) with my Wild biker pin on it... and I was wearing my Wild biker plain green t-shirt. Then they come outside and say to Mark "what are you going to get tattoos now?" I just grinned at him like ... told ya so.
So this week I am making two little curtains to hang on the french doors in my sewing area. I bought two magnetic curtain rods and I'm going to whip up some little valances to go on them. I decided to make them kind of funky so I'm going to piece the background in black and white fabrics and then I'm going to applique bright flowers and leaves over it. And I'm thinking about maybe adding white pompom trim across the bottom. So we'll see how far I get. It's not going as planned yet. Mark called me this morning because he forgot his wallet so I had to take it to him (that killed an hour) then I had to run to the store, Kellie got home from school at 1:15 and Molly has PT today. It's been like that around here lately and with school finishing next Friday (6/12), things are a little nutty. So Happy Monday - We'll see how far I can get with these curtains.
