Ryan's Racing Career...

I was looking at old photos and thought I would share this. Ryan was obsessed with cars from age 1! When he was 5 he saw a show about Sprint cars. That was it - That was all he talked about. He was OBSESSED! So when he was 7 years old he convinced Mark to let him race quarter midgets. They are like the mini version of a sprint car. And so started our two years of spending every weekend at the track. Oh joy. Mark did some research and found a track in Pennsylvania (about 1 1/2 hours from our house), found him a cool car, and bought him every piece of safety gear on the market (Ryan was the only kid racing with a head and neck restraint.)

Safety safety safety - Mark was all about safety. They are strapped so tightly into those cars and they have safety bars everywhere. So when the race would start...(Ryan is car #1 in this race)we didn't really worry about him. He was racing with 5 to 9 year olds. There would be a few little bumps along the way...(See Mark on the right running to make sure all is well)
Then there would be bigger wrecks like this...
And your front wheels would look like Ryan's do here...
And you would have to be carried off the track because you broke something - expensive - like the axle and the radius rods. mmmm, good times...
But, it's when you hear the screeching tires and hear that huge HUGE bang and then you see your little 7 year old's car flying through the air about 2 feet off the ground toward the barrier wall where it hits HITS and bounces back off onto the track while the dads are trying to wave off the approaching kids who haven't seen the red flag yet...or when he wrecks and flips and lands on his roof - that your heart really does stop functioning....And Ryan's response upon getting out -- WOW! LOL MOM! DID YOU SEE ME???!! LOL THAT WAS SO TOTALLY AWESOME! mmmmm, yeah, I saw that pumpkin. I'm going to go change my pants now. And I'm sure the paramedics will be finished with daddy before the start of the next race. :O) It never upset him - he thought it was hilarious. But at age 9 they move up to bigger cars with bigger engines and much faster speeds. He was 9 racing with kids up to 16 years of age. THAT'S SCARY BUSINESS! Those 16 year old's - yikes. The speed those kids go -- OMG! It only took 2 races for Mark AND Ryan to decide that that was enough of that. Thank God! So we moved on to greener, calmer, less expensive pastures and so ended Ryan's racing career.

Wow....I'm exhausted just reading about this!
He seems fearless, but what a lucky boy to have parents to indulge you in your hobby, and an expensive one at that.

Good grief! I don't think I would have lasted as long as you guys did. He sounds like quite the adrenaline junkie!
